THE STORY OF ROSE

But you know what stuck out in my mind about them? They were all sold to companies that distributed them nationally (and sometimes internationally), and I was sitting there in my house watching them.

Suddenly, I stopped asking myself, “How did this piece of shit get made?” and started asking, “How can I make a piece of shit that these companies will buy?”

Hence, Rose was born. A cheap (albeit ambitious) mini-DV horror feature that would draw on our influences from all the good horror movies (and some not-so-good) that we had grown up with.

I came up with a simple idea that’s been done numerous times: some teenagers wronged some other teenagers and then revenge is taken ten years later. Not rocket science. But I don’t care. I enjoy watching similar types of horror films (like Slaughter High and Valentine).

However, what I did not like about these types of films is that they always seemed to want the audience to feel sorry for the people getting picked off one by one. Why should we feel sorry for them? They’re assholes! They are the ones who “damaged” the person who’s come back for revenge. Let’s feel sorry for the killer instead of the so-called victims. This type of approach was used in The Crow, which is more of an action film than a horror film (despite how some people categorize it).

So I decided to apply the idea to more of a traditional horror film. Which was not a very easy task.

To make the audience feel for your killer, you have to show a major injustice being done to that person at the beginning of the movie. For Rose we decided to get pretty graphic with this by showing the character of Rose being brutally raped, and then she and her prom date are subsequently murdered. We figured that if we could pull off that opening scene just right, then we could shock the hell out of the audience and make them either run out and write religious articles condemning us to hell for all eternity OR make them want to watch the rest of the movie on the edge of their seats.

So with all of that information decided upon by us, I went off and started writing the script. Which was no mean feat seeing as I had only written one other feature-length script before (and that was with the help of my wife). But I was determined to write something better than the crap that I had been watching.
